5 BENEFITS OF JOINING AN ART CLASS
During my Kundalini Yoga Teacher training, I remember being very interested in learning more about creative energy. A creative force that is within all of us. The power that allows us to experience life with passion, wonder, and understanding. We obviously need to be active participants to achieve that. Our life might not be as eventful, exciting, and content if we don’t become our own life creators. Easy said than done. I know. In fact, we all know very well that it’s not that easy. Life happens, we might experience trauma, loss, pain, disappointment, too much responsibility, heartache, etc. Life can become heavy.
However, tapping into our creative power might be just a thing to make us feel better. I am a typical example of that. I need to create in order to feel more alive and happier. It helps me to feel lighter, and more connected and gives me a purpose too. That’s why I believe that finding some time to do something creative, something that we like, something that makes us smile is essential to our well-being. No matter what it is.
As an artist I obviously enjoy art. Especially mixed media art that gives me lots of options to explore what I like and don’t like. I have just opened an in-person Art Class for adults, and I would like to explain what anyone could gain if they join any art class of their interest. Let’s explore the five benefits of joining an art class.
1. TIME FOR YOURSELF
It often seems that we are all super busy all the time. We have so many tasks and responsibilities every single day, such that very often we forget ourselves. We look after our kids, partners, husbands, parents, siblings, friends, pets etc and often don’t make time for ourselves. However, sooner or later we discover that to make time for yourself is necessary if we want to continue to thrive. We are just humans, and we need to switch off too. In these times it’s easy to get overworked and overwhelmed. Joining an art class is a beautiful way to create time just for yourself. No worries and responsibilities. Two hours of me time. Imagine that.
2. ART HEALS
It’s scientifically proven that engaging in creative activities reduces stress levels and produce happy hormones in our bodies. Doing art therapy, joining an art class or doing anything creative such as dancing, singing, writing, cooking, gardening etc have positive impact on our health. It’s also good for our mind and for our soul. If I was a GP I would prescribe it as mandatory support to lots of patients with physical and mental health problems. Making art can lift your mood and create a sense of achievement. It can also help you to express your feelings and learn more about yourself.
3. LEARNING NEW SKILLS
Joining any class including an art class will help you learn new skills. What sort of skills you will learn depends on the class you are going to take. In mixed media art class, you might explore and learn about a variety of different paints, materials, textures, collages, prints, substrates, etc. You will experiment, try new things, and have fun being messy. I am sure that you will also create something that you are proud of. You are very likely to experience a sense of achievement and gained new confidence.
4. MAKE NEW FRIENDS
For many people creating and learning new things with others adds another element to learning. People joining the same art class are on the same boat. Even though, they might all come from different backgrounds and experiences, they are in the class because they have the same interest. Students often learn, inspire and encourage each other. They share together new ideas and discoveries. You will meet new people who might even become your new friends. You never know. I believe that art connects people together.
5. YOU BECOME MORE CREATIVE
This is something that I observe a lot. Lots of students I work with often say: ‘’I have never thought of that, you helped me to see things differently, I now started to create art at home too, I search for new materials wherever I go, etc.’’ There is more. It doesn’t just stop with creating art. Joining a creative group such as your local art class might also have an impact on your everyday life. Your self-esteem might start to grow a bit more. Perhaps you might even start feeling like you want to put more colour into your wardrobe, add some spices to your dinner, redecorate your home, etc. Life can suddenly become more colourful.
I hope that you feel a little bit more inspired trying to do something creative. If you are, just go for it. Usually, the only person who holds you back is you. In case you have any art class near where you live and you have been thinking of joining for a while, this is your time. Art and creativity is for everybody to enjoy.
